Jenne C's debut single, "The Beat Wants You" accesses a depth of operatic disco that hasn't been heard for a few generations. Like Donna Summer, Jenne C is trained as a professional opera singer and has participated in many live theatrical performances. In "The Beat Wants You," Jenne C takes a step in Summer's footsteps and brings the vibrato best known in Giorgio Moroder's disco jams. Nokiba's remix smooths out the thumping dance beats of the original and brings the song into an echo-filled underbelly.
The backing track to Jenne C's longing lines about desire and possession reignite memories of Robin S's "Show Me Love." This comes as no surprise as the Korg M1's matte tones are heard from beginning to end. What gives this track a unique edge is the pithy electrified drums undeniably produced on an 808. However, this is not simply a disco throwback. Rather, it has the feel of an alien's pastiche of an evening at an earthling discotheque. The juxtaposition of the fresh and bygone sources brings this atavism into the present without losing its attachments to history. Jenne C's vocal tone is both accomplished and notedly human. The way each note of hers is cut short during the intro envelopes her participation in the song in the guise of a cyborg. You can't help but think that this must be a new track from Diva Plavalaguna recorded at Flotsam Paradise Studios. This song has no flotsam though. Each element has its place and its moment. The final snap lets us know that the performance is done and we can return to earth.
Nokiba's remix keeps the crisp sounds on the clap and hi-hat and goes all in mellowing out the bass and underpinnings of the song. You're sent to Tokyo's sewers during dry season. This remix is a new endeavor for Nokiba, whose main stomping ground is in the Chicago breaking scene. The remix is dreamier, gentler, more open than the original. Still, it doesn't lose the driving force of the original's solid drop bass. We're left waiting in eager anticipation for the equally gentle voice of Jenne C in this remix. Like a timelapse video of cirrus clouds, the remix keeps you calmly absorbed.
